Our visit to St. Marianna University School of Medicine Hospital was an extraordinary experience that brought together hospitality, academic exchange, and an inspiring glimpse into the operation of one of Japan’s leading medical institutions.

St. Marianna Hospital's CT and imaging unit with modern equipmentThe visit began with a warm and sincere welcome from President Kitagawa, whose humble demeanor and gracious remarks set the tone for a meaningful afternoon. Standing beside a mural symbolizing the university's mission, he spoke with clarity and compassion, reinforcing the importance of global partnerships in medical education and care. His words reminded us that true leadership is grounded in humility and service.

Following the welcome, we gathered for a shared lunch with faculty and students from both St. Marianna and the University of Maryland. The meal was traditional, beautifully arranged, and, like the conversation, nourishing in more ways than one.

The hospital tour that followed was nothing short of phenomenal. From the state-of-the-art central pharmacy, where we observed advanced inventory and dispensing systems, to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and beyond, every department reflected precision, efficiency, and care. It was clear that St. Marianna is not only a hospital, it is a model of integrated health service delivery, supported by highly trained professionals and thoughtful design.

We were also fortunate to visit the radiology and emergency departments, where cutting-edge imaging technologies were explained by passionate staff. The systems in place highlighted the hospital’s commitment to innovation, safety, and fast, accurate diagnostics. It was impressive to see how technology and teamwork converge in high-stakes environments.

Perhaps the most breathtaking moment of the day was our visit to the hospital rooftop, which features a helipad overlooking a panoramic view of Kawasaki City. The scene was striking, a peaceful contrast to the high-energy activity inside the hospital. It served as a visual metaphor: healthcare is about rising above challenges with clarity, perspective, and purpose.

The afternoon concluded with presentations from both St. Marianna and UMB students and faculty. Topics ranged from neuroscience to pharmacology to imaging technology, showing the depth and diversity of inquiry shared between our institutions. I left the room inspired, not only by the content, but by the spirit of collaboration.

Today was a reminder that healthcare is more than science. It is a human endeavor, one that thrives on respect, knowledge-sharing, and the courage to innovate.
