The Nevermore Haunt
By: Amber Mueller
What do you get when you mix a passion for horror with an advanced degree in mechanical engineering? The most frightening, seriously maniacal haunted house Maryland has ever seen!
I met Joe Hudson, founder of Engineered Fear Productions and owner of The Nevermore Haunt, in undergrad about eight years ago. Literally since the day I met him (at a Halloween party, of course) his singular motivation in life has been to scare the ever-loving pants off of anyone and everyone, in the spirit of Halloween. This guy has horror in his bones, and it shows in his childhood-dream-realized, The Nevermore Haunt.
This is not the typical Haunted attraction you went to as a kid, in fact children under 12 years old or shorter than 4 feet are not permitted inside. You won’t have guys in rubber masks shouting in your face or going for the cheap scare. The Nevermore Haunt is far more sinister than that. Ever had one of those dreams where you’re in danger but you can’t make your legs move to get away? That’s the feeling I had when I visited the Haunt the very first time.
As you make your way through the creatively-crafted scenes you will encounter mangled factory workers, deranged serial killers, unlicensed physicians, vengeful sailors and creatures so terrifying they defy description. If you manage to keep your cool, you will be impressed by the artistically detailed scenes, the professional actors, and the turn-of-the 20th century horror theme that carries you throughout. I guarantee that by the end of the tour you will be grateful to return to the real world, as scary as it can be. Last fall, The Nevermore’s debut was terrifying (in a good way) by industry standards. This year they’ve added several more scenes and doubled down on the scares from last year.
This year, they have also teamed up with EVO Brewing, and are offering concessions on-site in addition to the specials you can receive at Dogwatch Tavern, Penny Black, The Point, and Alexander’s Tavern in Fells Point. I recommend grabbing dinner in Fells Point and then taking The Nevermore’s private shuttle from The Point to the Haunt’s location in Old Town Mall, a ten-minute ride. Groups of 4-6 are admitted together every 15 minutes to ensure each group can take their time and get a once-in-a-lifetime haunted experience. The Nevermore Haunt runs on select evenings from October 6 until November 4 from 7-11 p.m.
