Updates on NOVA
Spring is my favorite time of the year for NOVA. We have so many great events going on! If you missed out last semester because of a busy schedule, or you got a taste of some of the events we do and want more, this is your chance!
Brain Awareness Week will be March 20-24 this year. During BAW, our volunteers take over a classroom for a day and teach a full lesson on the brain. Last year we had stations set up where participants could touch fixed brains, control each other’s fingers through electricity, and make a cricket leg dance with music. It is definitely my personal favorite event. This year we will be traveling to 2-3 middle schools in Baltimore. Keep on the lookout for upcoming emails.
We will also be continuing our monthly trips to Spring Grove Hospital to bring donations and play BINGO with psychiatric residential patients. We travel once a month on Tuesday nights to entertain the residents with BINGO, provide snacks, and hand out donations such as clothes and toiletries as prizes. However, our donation supply will soon be running low. We will collect more at our 4th annual Halal on the Lawn. At Halal on the Lawn, students, faculty, and staff bring a donation and in return get free halal food. We will have food, games, and music set up on the nursing school lawn, date TBA.
We will be returning to Port Discovery Children’s Museum on April 10th. We will be doing a small science demo for elementary students. This is a great time to work with young kids, get your hands a little dirty, and teach them something.
If you are interested in any of these events or have ideas please join our email list at https://umbconnect.umaryland.edu/organization/nova or email Amanda at labuza@umaryland.edu for more information.
