Beyond Survival aims to reduce overdose deaths by using innovative technology to facilitate connection and peer support among people who use drugs. Beyond Survival will develop a Baltimore pilot to test the harm reduction app Be Safe by Brave for remote peer-to-peer supervision. The Be Safe app will reduce overdose deaths by virtually and anonymously connecting people with a supportive peer in the moment when they are alone and most at risk of overdose. Be Safe will be a non judgmental life-line to connection and support that is available anytime, anywhere. Beyond Survival is led by Lizzy Unger, a student at the UMBaltimore program for Health and Social Innovation, in collaboration with the Vancouver-based organization Brave.

Covid Watch ▾
Covid Watch empowers people to protect their communities from COVID-19 without sacrificing their personal privacy via decentralized Bluetooth contact tracing.
Covid Watch empowers people to protect their communities from COVID-19 without sacrificing their personal privacy via decentralized Bluetooth contact tracing. Our app uses Bluetooth signals to detect when users are in proximity to each other and alerts them anonymously if they were in contact with someone later confirmed to have COVID-19, without anyone (including the government) being able to track who exposed whom. This preserves an individual right to privacy while protecting the community and allowing people to make more conscious proactive decisions that benefit everyone.

Micro Medley is a vision for a video game that strengthens medical education regarding infectious disease and antimicrobials.

Micro Medley is a vision for a video game that strengthens medical education regarding infectious disease and antimicrobials. Microbiology is a daunting subject to learn, often relying on repetition, pneumonics, and brute force memorization. The game-based learning of Micro Medley would feature turn-taking battles of "bugs" like bacteria against drugs like penicillin. By making this critical content competitive and fun, it would stimulate learning and long-term retention for medical students. Micro Medley is the vision of Cara Dooley.

Utilization of Stem Cells in Regenerative Medicine in combination with Safer Viral Vehicle ▾
Utilization of Stem Cells in Regenerative Medicine in combination with Safer VirI plans to use AAV vector with human COX2 gene in combination with adipose tissue derived stem cells (ADSCs) to repair bone fracture defects in adult or elderly individuals.
Recent progress in the field of stem cell research resulted in new possibilities in therapies of clinical conditions either non treatable or difficult to treat. Adult Stem cells can be obtained from various sources from the body e.g.; bone marrow and/or adipose tissue. The latter being minimally invasive and could be obtained as a by-product from liposuction procedures. Previously research by me and colleagues has shown that Adeno-associated viral (AAV) vector with human-COX2 gene insert has augmented fracture healing in mice and recruited 5 fold stem cells at fracture sites. Here, I plan to use AAV vector with human COX2 gene in combination with adipose tissue derived stem cells (ADSCs) to repair bone fracture defects in adult or elderly individuals.
