Letter from the Program Director
Greetings! My name is Michelle Pearce, and I am the Program Director for the Graduate Certificate Program in Death, Dying, and Mourning. I am faculty in the Graduate School and the School of Medicine at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, as well as a licensed clinical psychologist. I’m excited to be leading this stimulating new program, and I’m delighted that you are considering joining us.
We’ve carefully designed this certificate program for participants and professionals who want to increase their competency and comfort level in issues pertaining to death, dying, and grief. These are such important topics, and ones we will all encounter as we journey through life. We believe that gaining advanced understanding of these complex and sensitive issues, as well as greater competency applying this knowledge, will serve you in both professional and personal contexts.
We want you to be successful, and we’re committed to making this a productive, informative, and enjoyable learning experience for you. We also want this program to fit well into the rest of your life—we know education is just one part of a fulfilling life. Under the Frequently Asked Questions tab I describe some of the things we’ve done to reach these goals.
I believe you will enjoy working with this exceptional team of faculty members. I handpicked the instructors for each of the three courses—each is an expert in his or her field of study, dedicated to education, and a warm and caring individual.
Finally, we believe you are the instrument of healing. As such, our goal is not just to fill your mind with new knowledge, although we promise to do that; we also want you to leave this program having had a personally meaningful experience engaging with the material, the instructors, and your fellow classmates.
The bottom-line is that we want you to both benefit from and enjoy your experience in this program, and we’re committed to making that happen for you. Please feel free to contact me personally if you have any questions about our program. We would be honored to have you join us.
Michelle Pearce, Ph.D.
