Halal on the lawn recap
By: Amanda Labuza
THE START OF NOVA'S YEAR
In case you don't know by now, the best Halal food for lunch is the cart outside the Hospital entrance on Baltimore St. They give generous portions of delicious food at reasonable prices and fit three wonderfully friendly guys inside. That's why we chose them to team up with for our annual donation drive. NOVA held its third annual Halal on the Lawn on April 22. Of course this year it probably should have been called Halal in the Lounge after we moved inside due to inclement weather.
In case you missed it, NOVA collected donations from over 180 students and faculty Friday afternoon. For the price of one donation, students were treated to the best Baltimore halal cart, drinks, and dessert. I'd like to say a huge "THANK YOU!!" to everyone who gave multiple donations (which was almost all of our participants). We collected so many piles of books, clothing, and toiletries I struggled to fit it into one picture. Our event was so successful and I am so grateful for everyone who participated whether by attending or behind the scenes.
While it is NOVA's major spring event, Halal on the Lawn does not mark the end of NOVA's year; it is just the beginning. The donations we collected will be used throughout the year as prizes for patients at Spring Grove Psychiatric Hospital. Many of the patients we serve have limited opportunities for shopping and limited personal items. When we visit monthly to play BINGO with these patients we break up the monotony of their week and give prizes like shampoo or a new shirt that they are in need of. We make sure everyone is a winner before we leave.
I encourage all of you to donate throughout the year, not just when Turkeys are on the table and houses are covered in lights. How? Well as always, I end this article with a shameless plug for NOVA. Consider joining us on the third Wednesday of the month and playing BINGO. Really excited? Consider helping organize BINGO or any of our other events. We will continue serving our community throughout the summer and onto the fall, so sign up for our mailing list to stay up to date on all events!
Author's note: To protect patients, there are restrictions on what can be donated. For the first time, NOVA is happy to announce this year they have collaborated with House of Ruth, a Baltimore Women's Shelter, to accept all donations Spring Grove cannot use. We are happy to serve multiple groups and not let any of the generous donations go to waste!
