2004 Ph.D. Career Day

The GSA's Ph.D. Career Day features speakers with careers in government, biotechnology, armed forces, and industry. The event is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 14 in Davidge Hall and includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Because space is limited, you are encouraged to register by Friday, April 2.

Speakers

Margaret Merryl McCarthy, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Department of Physiology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.  She is also the Director of Graduate Education for the Neurosciene Program.  Dr. McCarthy has received numerous awards including, the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award and the Young Investigator Award from the New York Academy of Sciences.  In 2003, she was awarded the Dr. Patricia M. Sokolove Outstanding Mentor Award at the University of Maryland, Baltimore.  She has over 20 years of teaching experience and has mentored graduate students and post-docs throughout her career. 

Dana Perkins received her Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, in 2002.  While a graduate student, Dr. Perkins received a number of awards for her contributions to biomedical research, including winning the National Collegiate Inventors Competition in 2001.  Currently, she works for the U.S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of Industry and Security as a Licensing Officer/Microbiologist.  Dr. Perkins is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland, Dept. of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, and she serves as a 1st Lieutenant/Microbiologist in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Rachel Winter, Ph.D. has been employed with Promega Corporation as a Field Application Specialist for the past year.  She recieved her bachelor's degree in Zoolology from the University of Florida and her doctoral degree in biochemistry from the University of Maryland, Baltimore.  Before entering graduate school, Dr. Winters spent four years teaching high school science.

Barry D. Adams, LCDR, is one of thirty uniformed active duty social workers serving in the United States Navy Medical Service Corps.  Prior to being assigned to complete the Ph.D. program in Social Work at UMB, LCDR Adams served Navy Personnel Command as Clinical Credentials Consultant for Navy Clinical Staff; Director of all Navy and Marine Corps Counseling and Domestic Violence Programs in Okinawa, Japan; Director of Social Services, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba during Operation Sea Signal; and Director of Family Services Programs, Navy Nucear Power Command, Orland, Florida. 

Mary Joan (M.J.) Tooey, M.L.S., A.H.I.P. has worked at the University of Maryland Health Sciences Library since 1986 where she has held numerous positions.  For the last four years she has been Deputy Director while simultaneously having administrative responsibility for the computing and technology services department.  She has also been the Associate Director of External Services and Development while serving for seven years as the Project Manager for the new Health Sciences and Human Services Library.  Currently, she is the Chair of the 2004 National Program Committee for the MLA Annual Meeting.  M.J. Tooey has received a number of awards, including the MLA Estelle Brodman Award for Academic Medical Librarian of the Year. Additionally, she has served as adjunct faculty at the University of Maryland, College Park and was a delegate to the White House Conference on Libraries and Information Services.
